Have you found it difficult to simply be yourself in a judgmental world? Sadly, today, the “popular people” control how the masses think, feel, and behave. It’s not unlike the pettiness found in schools around the world. I can’t help but be reminded about the typical grade school fight scenario, when thinking about this type of influence.

Two kids stand face to face staring each other down, angrily spewing words at one another. A crowd encircles them. Then, people on the outside start making comments that make them feel that if they don’t fight they will somehow be looked down upon for the rest of their lives. And when that doesn’t work, someone pushes one kid into the other, and a fight ensues. This scenario is interesting, because even though the kids were angry, they probably weren’t planning to fight…just to express their anger and disapproval of one another. BUT with all of the added pressure (and eventual force), they engaged against their wishes.

I painted the picture of the forced fight scenario, because I want you to see that this is how life tries to treat us on a daily basis. It’s hard to be yourself in a judgmental world, because it’s the most unpopular thing to do. Thinking for yourself is frowned upon in this society, but it can be done, and I will always argue that it should be done. If you would like to cut through the noise and learn how to be yourself no matter what, keep reading.

How To Be Yourself In A Judgmental World

Take some time to learn who you are.

Because we are taught from a very young age to fall in line and to mimmic others around us, we may never really understand who we are individually. I talk more in depth about this in my ebook How to Take Control of Your Life & Make It Amazing. I recommend that you spend some time alone with your thoughts. Start trying out some activities, foods, books, etc. to learn what you like rather than continuing to engage in what other people have told you to like. Once you have a good idea of who you are authentically, it will get easier to break free of the masses.

Pay close attention to what’s happening around you.

You, just like billions of other people around the world, have been conditioned to ignore your intuition and to go with the flow of things. This is why people can feel pressured into doing something that their entire beings are warning them against. If you pay attention to the things going on in the world around you, you’ll find that a lot of people who are doing what society expects them to do aren’t very happy. I mean, after you finish stunting and showing off in public, and you go home (away from cameras, judgmental looks, and opinions) who are you in those quiet moments? Some people would rather be relaxing at home amongst plants, drinking tea, and reading a good book, over partying and being in the public eye. What would you rather be doing over what you’re expected to do?

Make a move.

There is never a perfect time to transition into a new way of life. Most people are thrown into a new situation, because life forces them through circumstances beyond their control. But you can choose to just start being authentically you. Start going to the places you find interesting. Start hanging with the people you feel closer to. Eliminate the activities that don’t bring you joy. Start editing your life and form it to outwardly match the way you feel inwardly.

Let Your Weird Hang Out

You are who you are, and guess what…there are millions of other people in the world who like what you like, and who can totally relate to you. If you allow yourself to be bold and dress the way you like, speak the way you like, eat what you like, attend events you’re interested in, etc. you will learn about the others. This world can seem lonely and isolating when you’re associated with people who are not like you, but when you surround yourself with cool weirdos like yourself, you may feel more at ease and loved.

Find Your Tribe

Like I said before, this world can feel isolating, but there are people out there who can help you to feel at home. Try some meetup groups that surround things you are interested in. You might find a few new best friends. Just remember that you don’t have to be around people just because you’ve known them all your life, or because you’ve been friends since way back when. You grow and change, and sometimes your friendships don’t evolve the way you do. That means you may have to find a new tribe that fits your new being.

Living an authentic life on purpose is the best thing you can do for yourself. And I promise, once you start living this life of freedom, you will refuse to go back to living in the bondage of other people’s expectations and opinions of you. You deserve to experience true happiness. Give yourself the gift of freedom and authenticity by learning who you are and being 100% that person.

Have you felt like you were being looked down on for being different? If so, how did you handle it? How will you live your life now, after reading this article? You are amazing just the way you are. Remember that. No one can ever be you. You are unique, one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted by God. Show the world just what God created in all its glory. Be you.
