1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
The best news anyone could ever receive is that their debt has been paid by someone else. Can you imagine receiving a letter that all your debt is forgiven due to the generosity of someone else?
Well, that is exactly what Christ has done for us, and the letter is found in 1 John 1:9. This scripture reminds us that there is NOTHING that we can do that cannot be forgiven if we only confess it to God.
This may seem far fetched if you are not familiar with who God is, but that is the point. God is unlike anyone or anything we’ve ever encountered before. God is loving, merciful, and gracious towards all who turn to him for safety.
This world is full of chaos, turmoil, and…well, evil. However, we all have been given a shield to protect us from the evilness of the world. Through Christ, we have confidence that our debt of sin has been paid, and we no longer have to pay for the mistakes we’ve made. The spirit of God came into the world and took the form of man (Jesus). Jesus lived a perfect life so that we would not have to. When Christ died, he was simply taking our place to pay off our debt. This is the definition of love!
When we realize the sacrifice Christ made for us, we must make a decision to sacrifice our lives for Him. How do we sacrifice our lives for Christ? We must deny ourselves our natural desires and live only to please God. I mentioned that Jesus lived a perfect life. Jesus was an example for the world. So, we must do our best to live by Christ’s example.
How do I start the process of being forgiven?
Everyone knows the hardest part of any journey is the first step. As difficult, embarrassing, or depressing as it may be, we must confess our sins to God in prayer. Being transparent and repenting to God with a pure heart allows our sins to be forgiven.
God is merciful and long-suffering. This means that God’s response to our mistakes and shortcomings is to give us another chance. In the words of a great preacher, “I am glad God is a God of another chance and not a God of a second chance.” Wow! God is not keeping score. HE is long-suffering, which means his patience and tolerance for our sins are greater than what we can comprehend.
I can hear someone saying now, “But I haven’t prayed in weeks, months, or years.” Just like any relationship, it can be a little awkward speaking after an extended period of time. However, the benefits of finally communicating far outweigh the downside.
-Fresh start with God
-Opportunity to refocus and evaluate our relationship
-Security (I know that I will be forgiven and can be certain that I am saved for eternity)
-God wants me to come to him
-I will feel a great burden lifted off my shoulders when I’m done
-Emotions of guilt, shame, and embarrassment (I will feel ashamed and unworthy going to such a perfect God with my sins)
God is not like man. HE will not ridicule you if you come to Him. He will not reject you. He will not make you feel worse to “pay you back.” God is a loving father who loves his children unconditionally. There is nothing and no one that can change how much God cares for us or make Him turn away from us. If anyone ever tries to make you believe otherwise, they are lying to you. That includes yourself!
Do not allow your relationship with God to fail because of a lack of communication. God knew we would not live a perfect life. That is why he allowed Jesus to sacrifice his. If we were unable to be forgiven for our sins, Christ’s sacrifice would have been in vain. HE gave his life so that we could be forgiven. My prayer is that you will seek Him today and start fresh.
