5 Ways to Care for Your Mind

Take a deep breath. Now relax your face, your shoulders. It’s easy to find yourself in a whirlwind of to do’s. And by the time you look up, time has passed and you haven’t taken great care of your whole self. Think about it. How often do you take care of yourself beyond the physical? The truth is you need to care for your mind for the sake of your entire life on a regular basis.

Most of the world focuses on keeping their bodies just healthy enough to handle everyday functions. A small group of people (which is growing at the moment) intentionally takes time to make sure they care for themselves physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. All of these areas are important and should all receive our attention on a regular basis to make sure we stay well-rounded beings.

In this article, I won’t dive into all of the areas I mentioned above. Instead, I want to focus on the main things that will help you to put your mind in a better, more functional state. Taking care of your mind should be the first thing on your to do list. Focusing on the mind will help every other area of your life to fall into place. Below are five ways to take a timeout and focus on your mental state.

5 Ways to Care for Your Mind

Disconnect.

Unplug for a while. In order to check in with yourself and find out what’s going on inside your mind, you should disconnect from social media and all other digital platforms. Refrain from long phone calls too. Sit with yourself and your thoughts. Give yourself the opportunity to observe what you think and how you feel without any outside influences.

Clean your physical space.

The condition of your physical space is an indication of what’s going on in your mind. If your space is clean, organized, and well kept, it is likely that your thoughts are in order as well. If your space is out of sorts and a bit chaotic, it is likely that your thoughts are all over the place and could use some centering. Cleaning and organizing your physical space will have a psychological effect on you. Your mind will be freed up. It will feel lighter and more at ease.

Write out your thoughts.

Writing is a form of therapy. Putting pen to paper allows you to release your thoughts and feelings in a physical way. But the effects, like cleaning, has a psychological effect as well. Whether you write ten pages or one, it helps you to sort things out in a way that allows you to review and assess afterwards. If you read what you wrote, you can analyze your thoughts and feelings and get to the bottom of your own stuff

Listen to music.

Music is a normal part of life. Music is everywhere: in stores, on commercials, in TV shows and movies, etc. Music is also a form of therapy. Music can be used to suggest a mood, which is why you should always be careful and mindful of what you choose to listen to. Make yourself a playlist of music that has the mood you’re looking to experience, and allow yourself to get lost in the vibes for a while.

Surround yourself with people who make you feel safe and supported.

Once you’ve done your inner work, you can safely be around other people. Centering yourself first is key, because by doing this you reduce the amount of influence another person can have over you and your thoughts. In this process, you should choose to be around people who are centered themselves and who can give good, healthy advice.

If you take care of your mind, you’ll be able to achieve success in other areas of your life. Keep that in mind as you schedule in regular me time. It is very necessary for your mind to be at the top of your to do list. Which of these things have you already been practicing?
